Birding: Competition for birdseed — squirrels in the Prescott area
Earlier this week, I was both surprised and thrilled to see an Abert’s squirrel sitting in my platform bird feeding tray, getting its fill of bird seed. In the 16 years we’ve lived at this house, I have never seen an Abert’s squirrel in my yard! This is a species that...
Birding: When it comes to being observant, it pays to pay attention!
About two weeks ago, I was on my way to the mailbox when a couple of ravens flew into the area and starting raising a ruckus. Now that is not too uncommon in and of itself, but they were specifically flying around a large ponderosa pine tree in our front yard. Their...
Birding: Recent local rare bird sightings create excitement
On Monday, Jan. 31, I was making a birdseed delivery to a customer who lives in the Dells. Her yard is incredibly birdy, and I always enjoy delivering seed to her home. As I was leaving her home, I heard the unmistakable sound of vocalizing white-throated swifts,...
Birding: Vocalization mimicry can fool even the best birders
This past week, Gayla and I visited our son, Merritt, and his family in Edmond, Oklahoma enroute to Mexico, Missouri to attend the Wild Bird Expo trade show. I’ve attended this annual trade show since 2005 to do buying for our store, and as you might imagine, I always...
Birding: Thrashers, jays are common in the Prescott area
I was recently asked by a customer how likely it would be to see a curve-billed thrasher in Prescott. If I had been asked this question a few years ago, I would have said it was pretty unlikely. However, over the last few years, it seems that curved-billed thrashers...
Birding: Good nutrition for wild birds is important to their health
There is no question that what we eat affects our health. Better health is a natural byproduct of eating foods that have a higher nutritional value. This is true for all living organisms, not just humans. As a nature lover, and as a life-long birdwatcher, providing...
Birding: Spending time in nature is my happy place
Over the past week, I’ve had several opportunities to spend time out in nature—which I’ve loved. On my way home from Phoenix last Friday, I stopped in Black Canyon City and hiked the Black Canyon National Recreation Trail. The trailhead starts just north of the Rock...
Birding: Get out in nature — go bird watching!
Since the COVID-19 pandemic started over a year ago, the opportunity to gather with other bird watchers and do activities together has been somewhat limited. Historically, in our community, there have been at least two ways to participate in free bird walks — through...
Birding: California Condor release to take place this Saturday
Now that fall is upon us, you can expect to see changes in the variety of birds frequenting your feeders. There has already been limited reports of white-crowned sparrows. Soon, chipping sparrows, dark-eyed juncos, yellow-rumped warblers and ruby-crowned kinglets will...

About the owner, Eric Moore
My interest in birds began when I was very young. By the time I was five years old I was fascinated with birds and watched them at feeders in my parents’ yard in Massachusetts.
At the age of 13 I joined the Tucson chapter of the National Audubon Society. When I lived in Utah I participated in the Utah County Birders Club (there was not an Audubon chapter in Provo). I have been associated with the Prescott chapter of the National Audubon Society for the past eleven years and have served on the board of directors and as the publicity chair.
I have led bird walks, been in charge of the Spring Migratory Bird Count, and I have participated in the Christmas Bird Count in Tucson, Provo, and Prescott for a time period spanning 30 years. I consider myself to be an excellent birder. Birding is more than a hobby for me–it is a passion.
