Bird activity starting to pick up
Over the last week or two, I have been seeing and hearing evidence of spring's imminent return - in spite of our winter storm this past weekend. American robins are singing sweetly in the early morning hours, and house finches are singing profusely throughout the day....
Great backyard bird count this weekend
In last week's column, I asked the question "Why do you feed the birds?" I also briefly touched on Droll Yankees "Just Feed Birds and Make a World of Difference" campaign. Feeding birds can have a positive impact on the environment. Here is a quote from Droll Yankees:...
Why do you feed the birds?
When I started Jay's Bird Barn back in 2003, we were selling 25-pound bags of Black-oil Sunflower Seed for just $8.99. There were times when I would even run a coupon in the paper and sell it for only $7.99! Right now, my cost for a 25-pound bag of sunflower seeds is...
Sharp-shinned hawks hunt in bushes, shrubs
Earlier this week, we had a sharp-shinned hawk working the bushes in our backyard. This is a fascinating species to watch. Their hunting technique is an active process. This is a bird that dives into small bushes and shrubs in an effort to flush small birds from the...
Anna’s hummingbirds are coming back
Over the last week and a half, the Prescott area has experienced an influx of Anna's hummingbirds. Ever since our weather turned unseasonably warm, I have been receiving daily reports on hummingbird activity from customers via e-mails, phone calls and face-to-face...
Warm weather confusing the birds and the bees
My family spent five days in Tucson over the Christmas holiday. On Christmas Day, we hiked Pusch Peak in the Santa Catalina Mountains. Hiking Pusch Peak is like climbing stairs for two hours as you make the 3,000-foot ascent from the trailhead to the summit. The...
Don’t mistake that pine siskin for a lesser goldfinch
In a typical year lesser goldfinch numbers in the Prescott area dip in winter, dropping by as much as half from our spring and summer numbers. This year our goldfinches left early, and they left in record numbers. Over the past few months, sales for finch seed have...
Wild birds and winter survival
Last week's winter storm provided a vivid reminder of how fragile life can be for wild birds, literally living on the edge of survival from day to day. Between the snow and frigid temperatures, wild birds were forced to use their best instincts to survive (with a...
Bad weather a downer for bird-watchers
The Prescott Audubon Society's annual Christmas Bird Count was Dec. 22. I was joined by my son, Jeremy, one of our employees, and a customer as we worked to discover the hidden bird treasures of the Granite Basin Recreation Area. Now before I start telling you about...

About the owner, Eric Moore
My interest in birds began when I was very young. By the time I was five years old I was fascinated with birds and watched them at feeders in my parents’ yard in Massachusetts.
At the age of 13 I joined the Tucson chapter of the National Audubon Society. When I lived in Utah I participated in the Utah County Birders Club (there was not an Audubon chapter in Provo). I have been associated with the Prescott chapter of the National Audubon Society for the past eleven years and have served on the board of directors and as the publicity chair.
I have led bird walks, been in charge of the Spring Migratory Bird Count, and I have participated in the Christmas Bird Count in Tucson, Provo, and Prescott for a time period spanning 30 years. I consider myself to be an excellent birder. Birding is more than a hobby for me–it is a passion.
