Birding at the Verde Valley Nature Festival
This past week was the annual Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival in Cottonwood at Dead Horse Ranch State Park. The weather was cool for late April, but I have to admit it was the best weather we have enjoyed at this event in all the years I have attended. On...
Migration season provides birdwatching opportunities
Did you know that May is International Migratory Bird Month? Over the next few weeks, millions and millions of birds will be on the move as they fly from their winter range to their summer range. In the process of migrating, many of these species pass through the...
Questions and answers on spring bird activity Details
Spring is in the air, and with spring comes a barrage of phone calls. Today's column will address some commonly asked questions we field here at the bird store. Question: What is the correct recipe for making hummingbird food? Answer: The recommendation is to mix four...
Get Out and Get Into It’ at nature event this weekend
Last Saturday was one of those times when Mother Nature played a trick on us - the 2011 Birding Spree kick-off event was canceled due to snow. While the cancellation was disappointing, I am grateful for the snow that fell this past weekend. I am always of the opinion...
Look up! Birdwatching events in full flight
April is such a great time for bird watching in the central highlands of Arizona. Spring migration will be kicking into high gear by mid-month and some of North America's most beautiful migratory songbirds will begin to appear at seed, suet and nectar feeders. Each...
Many birding opportunities in Wickenburg
I was in Wickenburg last week leading a bird-watching trip for Northern Arizona University's Road Scholar program (formerly known as Elderhostel). The title for the Wickenburg program is "Cactus Wrens to Vermilion Flycatchers: Birding in the Desert." I love birding in...
Birding at the Gilbert Water Ranch
This past Saturday our family spent some time in the Phoenix area, which included time in Gilbert. I can't go to Gilbert without visiting The Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch, a 110-acre facility with seven large ponds, numerous trails, walkways, and wonderful native...
Spring-clean nest areas, bird feeders
Now that we are enjoying spring-like weather, it is a good time to perform some spring cleaning-for the birds' sake. If you have nesting boxes on your property that you have not cleaned out since last season's nesting activity, I would do that right away. This is also...
Attracting American robins to your yard
In last week's column, I mentioned hearing American robins singing in the early morning hours. Many residents of Prescott have moved here from other parts of the country where they had robins and are pleasantly surprised to discover we have robins here as well.A check...

About the owner, Eric Moore
My interest in birds began when I was very young. By the time I was five years old I was fascinated with birds and watched them at feeders in my parents’ yard in Massachusetts.
At the age of 13 I joined the Tucson chapter of the National Audubon Society. When I lived in Utah I participated in the Utah County Birders Club (there was not an Audubon chapter in Provo). I have been associated with the Prescott chapter of the National Audubon Society for the past eleven years and have served on the board of directors and as the publicity chair.
I have led bird walks, been in charge of the Spring Migratory Bird Count, and I have participated in the Christmas Bird Count in Tucson, Provo, and Prescott for a time period spanning 30 years. I consider myself to be an excellent birder. Birding is more than a hobby for me–it is a passion.
