Hummingbirds are now passing through Prescott
"Fall" migration is already underway even though it is only July! It was several weeks ago that Rufous hummingbirds started showing up throughout the Central Highlands of Arizona. If you are not seeing them in your yard, a good place to observe them is at the feeders...
Bird numbers are on the rise
The hobby of backyard bird-feeding is so interesting - and so are the people who feed the birds. This past week has been almost entertaining here at the store. If I have heard the expression "the birds are eating us out of house and home" once, I have heard it a...
Holiday trip to Utah yields American dipper sighting
My family celebrated the Fourth of July holiday in Utah. On the Fourth, we drove up American Fork Canyon in the Uinta National Forest. The snowpack in the mountains this year is amazing, and the snowmelt has created raging torrents of waters crashing down the rocky...
What to do when you find a baby bird
In the May-June 2011 edition of the Arizona Wildlife Views magazine published by the Arizona Game and Fish Department, there is an excellent article titled "Giving Back to Wildlife." I particularly appreciated the information in the sidebar titled "Leave Baby Wildlife...
Hummingbird Festival this weekend in Flagstaff
Concerned customers ask me every spring whether hummingbird numbers are down this year compared to last year. I personally feel that this year's hummingbird numbers are pretty much right where one would expect them to be for this time of year. Remember, the peak...
Tour guide organizing birdwatching trip to Brazil
When we celebrated Jay's Bird Barn's seven-year anniversary this past October, we invited Rick Taylor to do a book signing for his recently published book on Arizona birds. Rick lives in Tucson and owns and operates a birding tour company called Borderland Tours. He...
Questions and answers on feeding hummingbirds
A few weeks ago, I wrote a column with a question/answer format. I received a lot of positive feedback from that column and thought I would do another article along the same lines. Question: Is it necessary to put red food coloring in my hummingbird solution? Answer:...
Change of seasons brings changes in bird behavior
As breeding season gets under way, you will begin to notice some changes in bird behavior. During winter months, it is not uncommon for many species to join together in flocks while visiting your feeders. Shorter, colder days create a situation in which wild birds are...
When you can’t bird-watch, try bird-listening
Last Saturday I led a bird walk sponsored by the Highlands Center for Natural History as part of its third annual Birding Spree. The bird walk was in the National Forest at the White Spar Campground just off Highway 89. Whenever I lead a bird walk, I like to scout out...

About the owner, Eric Moore
My interest in birds began when I was very young. By the time I was five years old I was fascinated with birds and watched them at feeders in my parents’ yard in Massachusetts.
At the age of 13 I joined the Tucson chapter of the National Audubon Society. When I lived in Utah I participated in the Utah County Birders Club (there was not an Audubon chapter in Provo). I have been associated with the Prescott chapter of the National Audubon Society for the past eleven years and have served on the board of directors and as the publicity chair.
I have led bird walks, been in charge of the Spring Migratory Bird Count, and I have participated in the Christmas Bird Count in Tucson, Provo, and Prescott for a time period spanning 30 years. I consider myself to be an excellent birder. Birding is more than a hobby for me–it is a passion.
