Birding: Happy New Year and happy birding from Virginia
Last week, as 2021 drew to a close, Gayla and I flew to Virginia to visit our son Jeremy and his family. Fortunately, in spite of all of the COVID-related-flight cancellations, we were able to travel to see our newest grandchild, Jethro. And, as you might imagine,...
Birding: The year in review — looking back, looking forward
As I review the past year —from a birding perspective — I am so grateful for the birding trips I was able to participate in this year! In April, Gayla and I birded in southeastern Arizona and had a wonderful time. In May I went to Alamos, Mexico with a few fellow...
Birding: Prescott Audubon Society Christmas bird count results
Last Wednesday, Dec. 15, was the Prescott Audubon Society’s annual Christmas Bird Count. I have participated in Christmas Bird Counts since I was a teenager. Each year my assigned area is Granite Basin. It is a very large geographical area to cover, extending from the...
Birding: Where are all of our winter birds?
So far, our fall and winter migration activity has shown mixed results. Many of our typical winter birds are present, such as yellow-rumped warblers, ruby-crowned kinglets and white-crowned sparrows. However, noticeably absent are dark-eyed juncos, pine siskins and...
Birding: Berries are a way to attract bluebirds to your yard
I was driving eastbound on Rosser Street earlier this week, and just before I got to the community center, I saw a small bird perched atop a street sign in the median. Since I was driving, I only had a brief look with the naked eye, but I was pretty confident that...
Birding: Watson Woods, lake birding impressive
We have had such a lovely fall! Our daytime temperatures have consistently been running slightly above normal, and our morning low temperatures have been fairly mild. While it has been dry, our lack of precipitation is not unusual for this time of year, as October and...
Birding: Questions and answers about feeding hummingbirds in winter
On Sunday we were having a discussion at home as to whether anyone had seen a hummingbird in the last two weeks on either of the two feeders we still have out. As the three of us discussed it, the consensus was unanimous — nobody had any recollection of seeing a...
Birding: Recent local rare bird sightings create excitement
I received a text last week from a customer who lives in Montezuma Well (in the Verde Valley) reporting a rufous-backed robin in his yard. This is really an incredible find. I have only seen this species in North America on two previous occasions — once at the Cameron...
Birding: Wild bird survival in winter is all about food availability
As we get closer and closer to winter solstice, the days continue to get shorter as the nights get longer. While this change in day length does not affect us directly, it has a big impact on wild birds. They have less time during the day to forage for food, and they...

About the owner, Eric Moore
My interest in birds began when I was very young. By the time I was five years old I was fascinated with birds and watched them at feeders in my parents’ yard in Massachusetts.
At the age of 13 I joined the Tucson chapter of the National Audubon Society. When I lived in Utah I participated in the Utah County Birders Club (there was not an Audubon chapter in Provo). I have been associated with the Prescott chapter of the National Audubon Society for the past eleven years and have served on the board of directors and as the publicity chair.
I have led bird walks, been in charge of the Spring Migratory Bird Count, and I have participated in the Christmas Bird Count in Tucson, Provo, and Prescott for a time period spanning 30 years. I consider myself to be an excellent birder. Birding is more than a hobby for me–it is a passion.
