Nesting activity continues during the summer

Nesting activity continues during the summer

Last Wednesday I had the opportunity to do a little bird watching on the north side of Willow Lake. The habitat in this area is primarily live scrub oak mixed with pinyon pine and juniper. My timing must have been good, because it was delightfully "birdy." While I...

Visiting birds still hanging around

Visiting birds still hanging around

A black-bellied whistling duck was seen at Willow Lake this past week. This is a very rare bird for our area - certainly one worth seeing. I went out to the lake on two different occasions to look for it but struck out both times. However, I did see a lot of good...

Recent birding in the central highlands

Recent birding in the central highlands

Last Friday I led a bird walk at the Highlands Center for Natural History. It was a windy day and I was concerned the winds would negatively affect our ability to find birds, as they tend to hunker down under these conditions. I was pleased that we saw (or heard) 31...

West Fork in Oak Creek Canyon offers easy hiking and birding

West Fork in Oak Creek Canyon offers easy hiking and birding

This past week I presented the monthly program for the Northern Arizona Audubon groups in both Sedona and Flagstaff. Being in northern Arizona provided me with an opportunity to get out and go birding, of which I took full advantage! If you are looking for a...

Baby quail and house cats: a lethal combination

Baby quail and house cats: a lethal combination

This past week I started receiving reports of baby quail sightings in the Prescott area. Some of the reports were communicated via email and were accompanied by fantastic photographs! The occurrence of baby quail each year is an event that is looked forward to with...

Productive birding along the Verde

Productive birding along the Verde

I had such an enjoyable time bird watching this past week at Dead Horse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood, Ariz. While I didn't even come close to achieving my goal of hitting the 200-species mark for the year, I was able to add several "firsts" to my state list. Prior...

Spring birds are arriving

Spring birds are arriving

I love this time of year. I am an early riser, and I thoroughly enjoy the longer days, the warmer temperatures and the singing of wild birds early in the morning. I continue to work on my 2012 Centennial Challenge bird list, and I am very excited about the arrival of...

Summer hawk species are returning to the area

Summer hawk species are returning to the area

Last week I led a bird-watching trip on one of those very windy spring days. At one point, the wind blew so hard that it tipped over my tripod, which was holding a very expensive spotting scope. It landed in such a way that it totally knocked the scope out of...

About the owner, Eric Moore

My interest in birds began when I was very young. By the time I was five years old I was fascinated with birds and watched them at feeders in my parents’ yard in Massachusetts.

At the age of 13 I joined the Tucson chapter of the National Audubon Society. When I lived in Utah I participated in the Utah County Birders Club (there was not an Audubon chapter in Provo). I have been associated with the Prescott chapter of the National Audubon Society for the past eleven years and have served on the board of directors and as the publicity chair.

I have led bird walks, been in charge of the Spring Migratory Bird Count, and I have participated in the Christmas Bird Count in Tucson, Provo, and Prescott for a time period spanning 30 years. I consider myself to be an excellent birder. Birding is more than a hobby for me–it is a passion.
