New Year, new birds to be seen

Happy New Year! This month marks the tenth anniversary of my writing this weekly column for The Daily Courier. Boy, does time fly, but that is only fitting for one who owns a backyard wild bird store. As we begin a new year, my thoughts are on birding adventures. Each...

Warmer weather produces fine Christmas bird count

Warmer weather produces fine Christmas bird count

Wednesday, Dec. 18, was the Prescott Audubon Society's annual Christmas Bird Count. I was assigned to canvas the Granite Basin area from the intersection of Iron Springs and Granite Basin Road all the way to Granite Mountain. I did a four-hour reconnaissance one week...

Having a cat along while birding isn’t all that crazy

Having a cat along while birding isn’t all that crazy

Last week I met up with some friends to do some birding down in the Valley. We spent about five hours together birding at the Gilbert Water Ranch, also known as the Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch, in the town of Gilbert. I arrived right at seven o'clock, just as the...

Recent cold weather creates a bird feeding frenzy

Recent cold weather creates a bird feeding frenzy

This past weekend I was amazed as I watched the "feeding frenzy" and bird activity in my yard. While I always have feed available to the birds, when the weather is good they don't always eat at the birdy buffet, preferring to find food sources in nature. This past...

David and Goliath in the bird world

David and Goliath in the bird world

Imagine a small songbird weighing only 6.5 grams. Now picture a bird of prey weighing 150 grams. Based on the difference in size between the two different birds, one would never suspect that the smaller bird would act aggressively towards the larger bird - after all,...

Game Birds in Arizona… and Prescott’s Wild Turkeys

Game Birds in Arizona… and Prescott’s Wild Turkeys

Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you are enjoying time with loved ones and friends today. Since today is Thanksgiving, and it is an American tradition to have turkey on this day, I thought I would write about all of the different species of game birds found in Arizona....

Unusual Bird Sighting at the Pioneers Home Cemetery

Unusual Bird Sighting at the Pioneers Home Cemetery

When I am working at the store, I usually spend most of my time inside the store - but not this week. Ever since the fire at Jay's Bird Barn on Sunday, I have been spending most of my time on the phone - outside, behind the store. Since I no longer have an office, it...

Freak Accident Causes Fire at Bird Barn

Freak Accident Causes Fire at Bird Barn

A freak accident Sunday morning caused extensive damage to Jay's Bird Barn in Prescott. At about 9 a.m., Central Yavapai Fire Department responded to a call at the store, 1046 Willow Creek Road, regarding a fire. When the fire crew arrived at the scene, the store was...

Birds of Prey Currently Wintering at Willow Lake

Birds of Prey Currently Wintering at Willow Lake

Fall is a time of great transition in the bird world. Summer birds are still leaving, winter birds are arriving, and migratory birds are passing through. As fall gives way to winter, you will notice that the plumage - or coloration and markings - of some wild bird...

About the owner, Eric Moore

My interest in birds began when I was very young. By the time I was five years old I was fascinated with birds and watched them at feeders in my parents’ yard in Massachusetts.

At the age of 13 I joined the Tucson chapter of the National Audubon Society. When I lived in Utah I participated in the Utah County Birders Club (there was not an Audubon chapter in Provo). I have been associated with the Prescott chapter of the National Audubon Society for the past eleven years and have served on the board of directors and as the publicity chair.

I have led bird walks, been in charge of the Spring Migratory Bird Count, and I have participated in the Christmas Bird Count in Tucson, Provo, and Prescott for a time period spanning 30 years. I consider myself to be an excellent birder. Birding is more than a hobby for me–it is a passion.
