Birding: Spending time in nature is my happy place

Birding: Spending time in nature is my happy place

Over the past week, I’ve had several opportunities to spend time out in nature—which I’ve loved.  On my way home from Phoenix last Friday, I stopped in Black Canyon City and hiked the Black Canyon National Recreation Trail. The trailhead starts just north of the Rock...

Birding: Get out in nature — go bird watching!

Birding: Get out in nature — go bird watching!

Since the COVID-19 pandemic started over a year ago, the opportunity to gather with other bird watchers and do activities together has been somewhat limited. Historically, in our community, there have been at least two ways to participate in free bird walks — through...

Birding: California Condor release to take place this Saturday

Birding: California Condor release to take place this Saturday

Now that fall is upon us, you can expect to see changes in the variety of birds frequenting your feeders. There has already been limited reports of white-crowned sparrows. Soon, chipping sparrows, dark-eyed juncos, yellow-rumped warblers and ruby-crowned kinglets will...

Birding: Wrapping up our trip to Tanzania with a birding extension

Birding: Wrapping up our trip to Tanzania with a birding extension

Our 14-day ‘Northern Tanzania Wildlife Safari’ ended on Sept. 5. Leaving our group, Gayla and I transferred to a different safari vehicle with a new driver and a birding guide. We were headed for a custom-tailored, one-week extension that was totally bird-focused,...

Birding: Wildlife viewing adventures in the Serengeti

Birding: Wildlife viewing adventures in the Serengeti

Arriving in Serengeti National Park, we spent our first night at a tented camp — Embalakai Authentic Camp. I did not realize that all of our camps would be open — they were not inside a fenced enclosure. When it was dark, we were required to have an escort from our...

Birding: From Ngorongoro Crater to the Serengeti

Birding: From Ngorongoro Crater to the Serengeti

We just wrapped up our first full week here in Tanzania. Our travels have been both fruitful and fulfilling. There are eight participants in our group, and we are divided into a ‘photography’ group in one safari vehicle and a ‘birder’ group in another safari vehicle....

Birding: Greetings from Africa!

Birding: Greetings from Africa!

As crazy as it sounds (it is hard for even me to believe,) I am in Tanzania right now! Gayla and I flew here late last week to join Prescott resident, Walt Anderson, a naturalist, photographer, artist and former professor at Prescott College. We have only been here a...

Birding: Birding road trip to southeastern Arizona is fruitful

Birding: Birding road trip to southeastern Arizona is fruitful

Each day, I receive rare-bird email alerts through eBird. I enjoy looking through the emails each day to see what other people are finding around the state. I don’t typically drop everything and chase rare birds…but sometimes, the temptation is just too great....

Birding: Protect the environment — don’t spray those weeds!

Birding: Protect the environment — don’t spray those weeds!

Our summer monsoons have been such a blessing. However, sometimes our blessings can also result in challenges. What kinds of challenges can an abundance of rain bring? Weeds — and lots of them! As a naturalist, I enjoy the profusion of growth of all of the different...

About the owner, Eric Moore

My interest in birds began when I was very young. By the time I was five years old I was fascinated with birds and watched them at feeders in my parents’ yard in Massachusetts.

At the age of 13 I joined the Tucson chapter of the National Audubon Society. When I lived in Utah I participated in the Utah County Birders Club (there was not an Audubon chapter in Provo). I have been associated with the Prescott chapter of the National Audubon Society for the past eleven years and have served on the board of directors and as the publicity chair.

I have led bird walks, been in charge of the Spring Migratory Bird Count, and I have participated in the Christmas Bird Count in Tucson, Provo, and Prescott for a time period spanning 30 years. I consider myself to be an excellent birder. Birding is more than a hobby for me–it is a passion.
