Parking lot birds

Parking lot birds

One aspect that is unique to the hobby of bird watching is that you can participate in this sport no matter where you are. If you like to golf, you have to go to a golf course. If you enjoy skiing, you must go to a ski resort. And if you like to fish, you need to go...

Tips on winter bird feeding

Tips on winter bird feeding

As we inch closer to winter, many of our more common winter residents are a regular sight at our feeders. However, this year, more than usual perhaps, the birds are enjoying a rich abundance of nature’s bounty in the way of seeds produced as a result of the abundant...

Birds of Willow Lake

Birds of Willow Lake

This past Friday I led a free Jay’s Bird Barn-sponsored bird walk to the south shore of Willow Lake. It was a perfect morning, weather-wise, and the birds were plentiful. There was a significant increase in bird activity on the lake compared to just a few weeks ago....

The importance of water in winter for wild birds

It is hard to believe that it is already November! As the days grow shorter and the nights get longer, it is time to get your heated birdbaths or your birdbath heaters out of storage. It won’t be long before freezing temperatures turn your birdbath into an ice skating...

Identifying LBB’s and LBG’s can be challenging

Identifying LBB’s and LBG’s can be challenging

Many casual backyard birders have pet names for the birds they see in their yard such as an LBB for a “little brown bird” and an LGB for a “little gray bird.” There are certainly a lot of birds that fit into the brown and gray category, making identification difficult...

What do you call a group of hummingbirds?

What do you call a group of hummingbirds?

Earlier this week I was at a home in Forest Trails early in the morning, and the bird activity in the yard was amazing! I was out on the deck watching many different bird species taking full advantage of everything being offered-black oil sunflower seed, nyjer, suet...

Birding at Goldwater Lake

Birding at Goldwater Lake

This past week I led a Jay’s Bird Barn-sponsored bird walk to Goldwater Lake. As we assembled in the lake parking lot, it was very quiet in the forest, and I was concerned that we might not see very many birds. Well, I didn’t need to worry. As the morning progressed,...

Swap out your hummingbird feeders with suet feeders

Swap out your hummingbird feeders with suet feeders

This time of year we field the same question over and over again each day. “When should I take down my hummingbird feeders?” Personally, I usually take my last feeder down by Halloween. While hummingbird numbers have dropped significantly, there are still plenty of...

Bird watching at Willow, Watson Lakes is very productive

Bird watching at Willow, Watson Lakes is very productive

This past week I have spent time birding out by the airport, at Willow Lake, in Watson Woods, and twice at Watson Lake. The variety of birds I have seen has been fantastic—from wood ducks to common yellowthroats and flocks of yellow-headed blackbirds. About three...

About the owner, Eric Moore

My interest in birds began when I was very young. By the time I was five years old I was fascinated with birds and watched them at feeders in my parents’ yard in Massachusetts.

At the age of 13 I joined the Tucson chapter of the National Audubon Society. When I lived in Utah I participated in the Utah County Birders Club (there was not an Audubon chapter in Provo). I have been associated with the Prescott chapter of the National Audubon Society for the past eleven years and have served on the board of directors and as the publicity chair.

I have led bird walks, been in charge of the Spring Migratory Bird Count, and I have participated in the Christmas Bird Count in Tucson, Provo, and Prescott for a time period spanning 30 years. I consider myself to be an excellent birder. Birding is more than a hobby for me–it is a passion.
