Tips on winter bird feeding

Tips on winter bird feeding

I have been enjoying our winter weather — what a blessing it has been to receive so much rain and snow! Last winter was so dry. If I recall correctly, I don’t think we even received two inches of precipitation from January all the way to the first of July. Last week’s...

The Great Backyard Bird Count is this weekend

The Great Backyard Bird Count is this weekend

Last week, I wrote in my column that I hadn’t seen any hummers at the feeders yet.  I added that I’m not home very much during the day, so I could have a hummer and not even realize it.  The very next day, I saw three hummingbirds at the same feeder at the same time! ...

Registration for spring birding festivals is now open

Registration for spring birding festivals is now open

The title for my column last week was, “Are the hummers back?”  I received many comments on my column, including the following funny story from one of our customers on the very day my column was published in The Daily Courier.  “I read your article this morning with a...

Are the hummers back?

Are the hummers back?

Earlier this week I had an interesting email exchange with a customer that went like this: Customer: “Are the hummers back?  I just saw one in my backyard! I think I had better get the feeder out and then take it in at night to avoid freezing. What could they be...

Adaptability of birds is impressive

Adaptability of birds is impressive

Recently, one of our sons and his family moved to Mesa, so now we have an excuse to go down to the valley on a regular basis to spend time with some of our granddaughters. We spent Friday and Saturday this past weekend there, and I managed to squeeze in some birding...

Winter birding has its challenges

Winter birding has its challenges

I was in Atlanta last week attending the AmericasMart trade show. I am excited about some of the new products we ordered that will be coming into the stores over the next several months. Every time I travel, regardless of where I go, I always take my binoculars with...

Mid-winter bald eagle survey results

Mid-winter bald eagle survey results

This past Saturday, I was part of a team assigned to cover Goldwater Lake for the annual mid-winter bald eagle survey for the Prescott National Forest. At the same time, there were other teams stationed at our local lakes — Lynx, Watson and Willow — covering their...

Lawrence’s goldfinch sightings in the Prescott area

Over the past month or two, there have been several reports of Lawrence’s goldfinches in the Verde Valley and in the Prescott area. This is a species that summers in California and winters in southern Arizona. This west-to-east migration pattern is unusual in the bird...

Prescott Christmas bird count results

Prescott Christmas bird count results

On Wednesday, December 19th, I participated in the Prescott Audubon Society Christmas Bird Count. My assigned area for almost twenty years now has been Granite Basin. It is extremely helpful to cover the same area year after year, as I have historical knowledge of...

About the owner, Eric Moore

My interest in birds began when I was very young. By the time I was five years old I was fascinated with birds and watched them at feeders in my parents’ yard in Massachusetts.

At the age of 13 I joined the Tucson chapter of the National Audubon Society. When I lived in Utah I participated in the Utah County Birders Club (there was not an Audubon chapter in Provo). I have been associated with the Prescott chapter of the National Audubon Society for the past eleven years and have served on the board of directors and as the publicity chair.

I have led bird walks, been in charge of the Spring Migratory Bird Count, and I have participated in the Christmas Bird Count in Tucson, Provo, and Prescott for a time period spanning 30 years. I consider myself to be an excellent birder. Birding is more than a hobby for me–it is a passion.
