It’s Birdathon time!

It’s Birdathon time!

The month of May is International Migratory Bird Month and is celebrated across the globe. One of the ways this event is celebrated here in Prescott is the opportunity to participate in a friendly Birdathon competition sponsored by our local Prescott Audubon Society...

Spring — birding at its best

Each year I donate a guided bird walk to be auctioned off at the Highlands Center for Natural History’s “Wander the Wild” fundraiser event. On Tuesday of this week, I led a private birding tour for the winning bidder and several of her friends. We spent six hours...

The return of Swainson’s Hawks

The return of Swainson’s Hawks

Over the last week or two, I have been engaged in an exchange of emails with a customer who lives in Prescott Valley, near 89A and Viewpoint Drive. Our email conversation is directly related to the content of last week’s column regarding migration—what birds are...

Who’s coming, who’s going, and who’s staying

Who’s coming, who’s going, and who’s staying

Wild bird migration during the months of April and May will have a tremendous impact on the varieties of birds you will see in your yard.  Perhaps you are already witnessing a changing of the guard in your yard and at your feeders. How can you find out what birds are...

Spring birding down in the valley

Spring birding down in the valley

I was in Phoenix this past week and managed to squeeze in a few hours of birding—first along the Salt River, and later at Gilbert Water Ranch.  It was a lovely day.  It didn’t get above 70 degrees all day. The drive down provided early evidence that we should have a...

Spring has sprung!

Spring has sprung!

What a difference a week makes. Just last week I was in Flagstaff, and the wind was blowing so hard and the snow was falling so fast it was near-blizzard conditions. Earlier this week I had a speaking engagement in Sedona, and as I drove back it was 78 degrees in the...

There’s a hoot-owl howling by my window…

There’s a hoot-owl howling by my window…

Over the last few days I have been experiencing the lyrics to Michael Murphy’s hit song from the 70’s, ‘Wild Fire’, as “there’s been a hoot-owl howling by my window now, for six nights in a row.” Actually, to be a little more accurate, there have been two great horned...

Is it nesting season already?

Is it nesting season already?

What a difference a week makes as we compare the weather this week to just over a week ago! All of the snow has melted, and the birds are singing as if it were already spring!  I was helping a customer in the store last week, and she wanted to attract hummingbirds...

Winter survival for wild birds is all about finding food

Winter survival for wild birds is all about finding food

Last week, I was in Yuma participating in a Prescott Audubon Society bird watching trip prior to the big snow storm hitting Prescott. I was monitoring the forecast and ended up making the decision to get on the road a day early, fearing I might not make it back to...

About the owner, Eric Moore

My interest in birds began when I was very young. By the time I was five years old I was fascinated with birds and watched them at feeders in my parents’ yard in Massachusetts.

At the age of 13 I joined the Tucson chapter of the National Audubon Society. When I lived in Utah I participated in the Utah County Birders Club (there was not an Audubon chapter in Provo). I have been associated with the Prescott chapter of the National Audubon Society for the past eleven years and have served on the board of directors and as the publicity chair.

I have led bird walks, been in charge of the Spring Migratory Bird Count, and I have participated in the Christmas Bird Count in Tucson, Provo, and Prescott for a time period spanning 30 years. I consider myself to be an excellent birder. Birding is more than a hobby for me–it is a passion.
