Birding: Impressive conservation efforts by local HOA

Birding: Impressive conservation efforts by local HOA

Several weeks ago I was asked if I would be willing to visit with the residents of a Homeowners Association here in Prescott to review what they had done to develop open space in their community to make it both wildlife friendly and user friendly for the residents....

Birding: New yard bird sighting

Birding: New yard bird sighting

Our home here in Prescott is just off of Rosser Street and borders a seasonal creek. The habitat along portions of the creek is full of native trees and shrubs. Some areas along the banking are so thick with dense vegetation that you can’t even walk through it. Some...

Moore: Adjustments to winter bird-feeding activity

Moore: Adjustments to winter bird-feeding activity

We have enjoyed such a beautiful fall, but each day inches us a day closer to winter weather. Our brief cold snap earlier this week is a quick reminder of what lies ahead in the coming months.  Our winter birds seem to be settling in — seed and suet eaters are a...

Birding: Recent bird sightings in the Verde Valley

Birding: Recent bird sightings in the Verde Valley

I spent some time birdwatching over in the Verde Valley this past weekend.  Gayla and I spent two nights at the Jerome Grand Hotel and took day trips throughout the valley.  I don’t know how many times (hundreds?) I’ve driven through Jerome, but I’ve never really...

Birding: What to do if you find a banded or tagged bird

Birding: What to do if you find a banded or tagged bird

This past week I led a Jay’s Bird Barn-sponsored bird walk to Granite Basin.  It was a very quiet morning — it was challenging to rustle up any birds!  We saw a few of the more common species, such as white-breasted and pygmy nuthatches, red-naped sapsuckers, hairy...

Recent bird walks yield interesting sightings

Recent bird walks yield interesting sightings

This past week I had the opportunity to lead bird walks on three consecutive days. The first birding activity was an outdoor bird talk for the residents of Las Fuentes in the park adjacent to their facility. It was a pleasant, overcast morning, as we sat under the...

Birding: wild birds and native plants are inextricably connected

Birding: wild birds and native plants are inextricably connected

I am frequently invited to do speaking engagements where I talk on the subject of landscaping to make one’s yard bird-friendly.     With all of the new development that we are seeing on the north end of Prescott, as well as in Prescott Valley, I have to admit it...

Lack of summer rain may affect our winter birds

Lack of summer rain may affect our winter birds

This past Saturday, my wife Gayla and I finished hiking the Prescott Circle for the first time.  Several months ago we started where the trail crosses Iron Springs Road and heads north and east towards Williamson Valley Road. From the time we started hiking the circle...

Birding: California Condors released at Vermilion Cliffs

Birding: California Condors released at Vermilion Cliffs

This past Saturday, I attended the California condor release at the Vermilion Cliffs north of 89A. This is the second year in a row I’ve attended, and, I have to admit, this is a really fun event! Four condors, raised in captivity for the last 18 months, were...

About the owner, Eric Moore

My interest in birds began when I was very young. By the time I was five years old I was fascinated with birds and watched them at feeders in my parents’ yard in Massachusetts.

At the age of 13 I joined the Tucson chapter of the National Audubon Society. When I lived in Utah I participated in the Utah County Birders Club (there was not an Audubon chapter in Provo). I have been associated with the Prescott chapter of the National Audubon Society for the past eleven years and have served on the board of directors and as the publicity chair.

I have led bird walks, been in charge of the Spring Migratory Bird Count, and I have participated in the Christmas Bird Count in Tucson, Provo, and Prescott for a time period spanning 30 years. I consider myself to be an excellent birder. Birding is more than a hobby for me–it is a passion.
