Birding: If you want to know what’s in your backyard, go outside

Birding: If you want to know what’s in your backyard, go outside

A few weeks ago, I received a call from a homeowner in Forest Trails who said she wasn’t seeing any birds in her yard.  I found this statement to be interesting, knowing that Forest Trails has a lot of native habitat.  I agreed to visit her yard and take a look...

Birding: Lack of summer monsoon rains having impact on wildlife

Birding: Lack of summer monsoon rains having impact on wildlife

I have recently been thinking how ironic it is that some of our ‘winter’ birds will be back in Prescott next month. Our recent spell of hot, dry weather makes fall seem so far away, even though it is just next month.  Our unseasonably hot daytime temperatures and the...

Birding: Looking for yellow-billed cuckoos is driving me crazy

Birding: Looking for yellow-billed cuckoos is driving me crazy

We’ve all heard the expression of someone being a little ‘cuckoo’, or ‘going cuckoo.’ I have been a little obsessed with cuckoos myself — yellow-billed cuckoos that is.  I have been diligently recording my bird sightings into eBird this year, and have seen 246 species...

Birding: Birding with my boys in northern Utah

Birding: Birding with my boys in northern Utah

I made a quick trip to Utah this past week to help a friend move from Prescott to Logan. This gave me the opportunity to visit two of our sons that live in Provo, and to do some bird watching in northern Utah.  While I grew up in Tucson, I have spent a lot of time in...

Birding: Baby hummingbird rescue has happy ending

Birding: Baby hummingbird rescue has happy ending

Last Friday morning, I received an urgent phone call from some folks who live out Williamson Valley Road. They explained they had a baby hummingbird that was trying to leave the nest, but was “stuck.” Their fear was that the mother was going to tire of feeding the...

Birding: Goldfinch numbers — are they up or down?

Birding: Goldfinch numbers — are they up or down?

One of my many roles at the Bird Barn is answering questions from customers. Sometimes the questions are about bird behavior or the products we sell. More often than not, the questions have to do with the numbers of birds people are NOT seeing.  Rarely does anyone...

Moore: Getting out and enjoying nature in our ‘backyard’

Moore: Getting out and enjoying nature in our ‘backyard’

Several years ago, I heard the following story, which I will attempt to retell in my own words.  Back in the 50s or 60s, a young man worked as a service station attendant in southern Utah.  One day, he was refueling a car with a New York license plate. The owner of...

Birding column: Birding at the Upper Verde River Wildlife Area

Birding column: Birding at the Upper Verde River Wildlife Area

This past Saturday, I did some birding along a stretch of the Upper Verde River. I had two ‘target’ birds on this particular outing — golden eagle and yellow-billed cuckoo. Both of these species were on my wish list when I visited southeastern Arizona a few weeks ago,...

About the owner, Eric Moore

My interest in birds began when I was very young. By the time I was five years old I was fascinated with birds and watched them at feeders in my parents’ yard in Massachusetts.

At the age of 13 I joined the Tucson chapter of the National Audubon Society. When I lived in Utah I participated in the Utah County Birders Club (there was not an Audubon chapter in Provo). I have been associated with the Prescott chapter of the National Audubon Society for the past eleven years and have served on the board of directors and as the publicity chair.

I have led bird walks, been in charge of the Spring Migratory Bird Count, and I have participated in the Christmas Bird Count in Tucson, Provo, and Prescott for a time period spanning 30 years. I consider myself to be an excellent birder. Birding is more than a hobby for me–it is a passion.
