Birding: Looking back — looking ahead to the future
I was at the Jay’s Bird Barn store in Flagstaff earlier this week. The store is located at the end of a very busy shopping center, and we have several windows looking out onto the landscaping adjacent to our store. We have a variety of bird feeders hung up in one of...
Birding: Low water levels at local lakes is a concern for arriving migratory birds
I led a Jay’s Bird Barn-sponsored bird walk to Watson Woods and Watson Lake this past Saturday. Before meeting up with the group, I spent some time birding at the wastewater treatment plant on Sundog Ranch Road, south of Prescott Lakes Parkway. My birding efforts...
Birding: Finches, finches and more finches
Earlier this spring, and even persisting into early summer, customers were lamenting that they either didn’t have any lesser goldfinches or that they were seeing fewer than they had last year. Having been a birder for so long, I take these comments somewhat casually,...
Birding: Finding balance in life even where there is a ‘new normal’
If there is anything 2020 has taught us this year, it is the need for resilience. Life can change quickly. There is so much that we lack ‘control’ over. Ultimately, what matters is our ability to adapt to change and to remain hopeful and cheerful when things are...
Birding: Granite Basin is hopping with birds and … goats?
Over the last few weeks, I’ve gone bird watching at Granite Basin a couple of times. The level of bird activity has been off the charts, particularly in the area west of the lake. What has fascinated me was not just the quantity of birds but the variety of birds...
Birding: Sandpiper ID ‘workshop’ brought to you by migrating birds
Last week, the title for my column was “Fall migration is in full swing at our local lakes.” As I was writing my column this week, I realized I could have used the same title again! This past week, I have personally witnessed the impact of fall migration at several...
Birding: Fall migration is in full swing at our local lakes
September ushers in a lot of changes in backyard bird activity. Many of ‘our’ nectar-and insect-dependent bird species migrate early. This is true of the three oriole species found in the Arizona Central Highlands. Bullock’s, Scott’s and hooded orioles have already...
Birding: Butterfly Springs, aka ‘Warbler Springs’
This past week, in an effort to add to my Arizona year list, I made a trip up Mingus Mountain to look for migrating warblers. In the spring, I had the goal to see a variety of warblers that were moving through this region on their way north. I knew that if I didn’t...
Birding: The wonder of hummingbirds — nature’s flying jewels
The month of August is peak hummingbird season in the Arizona Central Highlands. Each day at the Bird Barn, we hear from customer after customer about the large number of hummers being seen at their feeders. One customer told me he went through 44 pounds of sugar last...

About the owner, Eric Moore
My interest in birds began when I was very young. By the time I was five years old I was fascinated with birds and watched them at feeders in my parents’ yard in Massachusetts.
At the age of 13 I joined the Tucson chapter of the National Audubon Society. When I lived in Utah I participated in the Utah County Birders Club (there was not an Audubon chapter in Provo). I have been associated with the Prescott chapter of the National Audubon Society for the past eleven years and have served on the board of directors and as the publicity chair.
I have led bird walks, been in charge of the Spring Migratory Bird Count, and I have participated in the Christmas Bird Count in Tucson, Provo, and Prescott for a time period spanning 30 years. I consider myself to be an excellent birder. Birding is more than a hobby for me–it is a passion.
