Birding: Recent bird walk resulted in a lot of great sightings
Last week I led a Jay’s Bird Barn-sponsored bird walk to the recharge ponds near the Prescott airport. Despite cold morning temperatures and a chilly breeze, we had a delightfully birdy morning. As I was driving through the industrial area south of the airport,...
Birding: Normally quiet owls are dueting back and forth
Over the last few weeks there has been a pair of great horned owls in my neighborhood that have been hooting up a storm. Their behavior has been somewhat surprising to me. First, it seems too early, as breeding season is still two months away; and second, they are...
Birding: Head over to Lynx Lake to see Mandarin ducks
Up until a few months ago, if you were to ask me what the prettiest duck species is in the Prescott area, I would have answered “wood duck.” Wood ducks are an absolutely beautiful bird species that naturally occurs here. They are non-migratory and breed in the...
Birding: When it comes to birding, Arizona is a destination location
This past weekend, I had the privilege of speaking at the monthly membership meeting for the Las Vegas Red Rock Audubon Society chapter at the Clark County Wetlands Park. My PowerPoint presentation focused on the diversity of bird species found here in Yavapai County....
Birding: Citizen science, contributing to the knowledge of birds in Mexico
This past weekend I had the privilege of participating in the 50th anniversary celebration of the Sister City relationship between the City of Prescott and Caborca, Mexico. There was a light dusting of snow and the temperature was down in the 20’s when our delegation...
Birding: Attract more birds with wider variety of food
It is not uncommon for customers to come in and ask, “What else should I be feeding the birds?” The answer to this question depends on where you live. Why? Because the habitat where your home is located dictates what kinds of birds you can attract to your yard. For...
Birding: Fundraising event to benefit Brad Newman
I continue to receive regular reports from customers regarding flocks of pinyon jays showing up at backyard bird feeders in the Williamson Valley area. Most people are initially thrilled when they show up — but the newness wears off quickly! Pinyon jays are a flocking...
Birding: Free digi-scoping photography workshop available next week
As a young birder, I started doing wild bird photography when I was around 13 years old. Admittedly, I wasn’t very good, but photographing birds was an extension of my love of birds. I had a serious drawback though — the camera I was using — an old Minolta — didn’t...
Birding: Birding in the Midwest results in delightful discoveries
Last week, Gayla and I flew to Oklahoma City to spend time with our son, Merritt, and his family before continuing to Missouri to attend the annual Wild Bird Expo in Mexico, Missouri. I’ve been attending this annual trade show in Missouri since 2005! While in...

About the owner, Eric Moore
My interest in birds began when I was very young. By the time I was five years old I was fascinated with birds and watched them at feeders in my parents’ yard in Massachusetts.
At the age of 13 I joined the Tucson chapter of the National Audubon Society. When I lived in Utah I participated in the Utah County Birders Club (there was not an Audubon chapter in Provo). I have been associated with the Prescott chapter of the National Audubon Society for the past eleven years and have served on the board of directors and as the publicity chair.
I have led bird walks, been in charge of the Spring Migratory Bird Count, and I have participated in the Christmas Bird Count in Tucson, Provo, and Prescott for a time period spanning 30 years. I consider myself to be an excellent birder. Birding is more than a hobby for me–it is a passion.
